Xenophora Studies
Xenophora Studies

2020

A series of studies of xenophora specimens in the collections at Natural History Museum, London and Leeds Museums and Galleries. Xenophora are marine gastropods, found throughout the world in coastal regions. A collector and curator, most species of xenophora gather mollusc shells, stones, fragments of coral, sea-urchins, sponges and grains of sand from the sea floor and attach this material to its shell. Over time the xenophora’s shell becomes an assemblage of found objects, specific to their locality. The xenophora became a central character within my practice in 2019 after an encounter with a museum specimen.
